Measure the page customers use
Start with the home page and a core service page, not only an administrator dashboard. Note the heaviest images, third-party scripts, delayed content and error messages. Keep a before state so a later change can be checked instead of guessed.
Separate performance layers
Images, server response, render-blocking scripts and theme or plugin behaviour can create different symptoms. WordPress documents caching as a performance layer, but a cache does not remove an oversized hero image or a page that depends on failing JavaScript.
Protect search and conversion
Do not remove useful text or hide service pages simply to make a score look better. The priority is a page that loads reliably, can be understood by a visitor and remains crawlable. Verify after each change
